Most people get European rental car insurance wrong  |  Third-party vs. rental company — one choice, a difference of thousands of euros
⚠️ This is a "concept overview" only

Your actual choice depends on your travel style, countries, itinerary, and vehicle

Choosing based on this table alone is likely to lead you to the wrong choice

⚠️ 2026 Fact Check — What is Super Cover?

Super Cover is a vehicle-damage liability reduction program that can fully waive your out-of-pocket cost for accidents and scratches. The name varies slightly by rental company.

Avis/Hertz Super Cover   Sixt Super Top Cover (LDW Excess 0)   Europcar Premium Protection Package   Others SCDW, Full Coverage

With Super Cover added, vehicle accidents and scratches can be fully waived, so it's generally worth adding as a default when renting in Europe.

That said, the following are NOT covered even with Super Cover:

In Nordic countries like Norway (excluding Iceland), Super Cover only lowers your deductible — it doesn't fully waive it. If traveling there, add World Wide Insurance (WWI) or similar on top of Super Cover.

Glass & Tyre Cover is already included once you have Super Cover, so there's no need to add it separately. This option exists on its own specifically for people who skip Super Cover but still want tire/glass protection. That said, wheel rims are not included.

👉There's no such thing as "full cover." Whatever insurance you pick, some exclusions always exist.

✅ When to Choose Which

🔵 Rental company insurance is recommended if

👉Pay more, worry less — if there's an accident, it's handled on the spot. No anxious waiting for a refund

If 2 or more of the following apply, rental company insurance is usually the better fit

🟡 Third-party insurance can work if

👉The cost-saving choice — but you have to accept the pay-first, refund-later structure if an accident happens

❌ 3 Things You Should Never Do

⚠️ Miss these 3 things and one accident can cost you €500–€3,000

⚠️ The Reality Check — Accidents Are Less Simple Than You'd Think

Most accidents are minor contact incidents.
The real problem isn't the accident itself — it's 👉 how the claim gets processed.

Same contact accident Third-party insurance Rental company insurance
At the sceneRental company charges €500–€3,000 to your card immediatelyWaived on the spot
After you're homeSubmit paperwork → wait 2 weeks to several monthsNo further steps needed
RiskRefund can be denied over incomplete paperworkNone
👉Choosing insurance isn't really about "price" — it's about how the claims process works if something happens

Pick wrong once, and you can end up dealing with cost, time, and stress all at the same time during your trip

🔻 Final Check — If Any of These Apply to You

⚠️ Choosing from this state is likely to lead you to the wrong choice

Insurance shouldn't be picked based on "cheapest" — pick what actually fits your trip conditions
